Bad Weather Fashion Photo Shoot

I hear it all the time, the weathers too bad, it’s too cloudy, it’s too windy, etc….. What…..are you serious? I disagree especially when it comes to fashion photography this can actually work to your advantage and give you the best finished results and you can create epic images.

OK warm weather and summer sunsets and sunrises can be really magical but, every season and weather condition can have its own advantages and disadvantages. Why do I love winter weather for photography? You have cloud and this is mother nature’s own magical way of giving you the nicest and softest light possible, no harsh shadows or models squinting with closed eyes. Another great advantage is the wind and especially if you have a model with beautiful long hair it can really be used to your advantage. As a photographer I say embrace whatever the weather is like, don’t look at the negatives look at the positives that can be gained from it.

Another point that people overlook is storytelling, what do you want to tell in your photography, then look at how you can take this story in your mind and bring it to life. For me I am very lucky in that I have an amazing location where I live and work and throughout the years I have made amazing friends and contacts that I can work with and we help each other. Several things I look at when planning a photoshoot, is it a product that I photographing for a company or is it for a person? I then look to see how can I best create that vision, so next thing is I look at locations that I think will be best suited and also how the model that is chosen will be a good match for that location.

I love how you can see the wild rugged landscape and you get a sense of the cold and the wind and the rain and yet the beautiful Niamh was natural and relaxed in these images. She is a real professional and believe me the weather was terrible but you would never know it, but with these warm beautiful clothes from Northcoast Knitwear and Accessories from Bridge Street Carndonagh here in Inishowen Co. Donegal it made for an amazing day. What will set you apart from the rest is getting out there when the weather is bad, it’s easy when the weather is good but what makes the difference is going the extra mile!
